Canada’s First Open Embryo Donation Program

Recently a Canadian not-for-profit charity called Beginnings, launches Canada’s first open embryo donation program in the country.

“Embryo donation addresses a major dilemma for many Canadians who have completed in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments,” says Beginnings Executive Director, Kerry Vandergrift.

Until now in Canada according to the Beginnings agency website, options for couples with embryos in storage were limited to having their embryos destroyed, leaving the embryos stored indefinitely, or donating their embryos for medical research.

“Now there’s another option,” says Ms Vandergrift. “Beginnings has launched an Embryo Donation Program giving couples the opportunity to donate their remaining embryos to infertile couples hoping to become parents.

Unfortunately by looking at their website, their embryo donation program comes with a very high price tag to families trying to build their families through the miracle of embryo donation.

It is a good thing that now in Canada, couples with embryos in storage have the option of donating their remaining embryos to another couple who is trying to conceive, but in my opinion the agency Beginnings who will be doing the matching has fees that are way too high.
According to the Beginnings website as of today April 12/2010, their program fees and costs are $13,500. Additional costs will include the fertility clinic fee, clinic storage fees after contractual agreement, disbursements (travel costs, etc), independent legal advice re contracts and additional counseling costs.

I’m not sure if this is available in Canada but please if you are thinking about receiving embryos though embryo donation in Canada, please check with your clinic whether you can deal with them directly. If that is possible you could possibly avoid paying Beginnings’ agency fees.

Also check Miracles Waiting in the US. They charge only $150 to those trying to find embryos to build their families through embryo donation. Donors can do the same for free. They have online profiles from both families wanting to donate their embryos and families waiting to receive embryos. Recipient families can post their profile and donor families read through and email them if they are interested. Some donors also post profiles and recipient families can contact them directly.

Webisode: Part 1 - Neil and Karen, A year and a half

A new campaign sponsored by EMD Serano was launched on February 19, 2010. The campaign was created to educate couples on how to increase their chances of conceiving.
They created a 5 video webisode series. I will be posting them here.
You can watch the whole series at: increaseyourchances.org.

Those videos reminded me how I used to feel more than a decade ago when we just started our journey trying to get pregnant.
Then, I was still so hopeful that I would have the family that I always hoped for…. but after 10 years of trying and finally being blessed with the birth of our lovely daughter (eight years ago) I still have the desire to have another child and so I keep trying!

Going for another FET!

After a lot of consideration I decided to try again to get pregnant and go back to the Czech Republic for a new FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer).

Now I’m just waiting for Dr. Stepan to let me know when I need to start taking Norethisteron and when I need to stop taking it to be able to have the embryo transfer some time during the week of December 7th to the 12th. That week is the best for me to travel to the Czech Republic for another round of treatment, otherwise I will need to wait probably until March.

If you don’t know what a FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer) is, here it is:

A frozen embryo transfer can be used to produce a viable pregnancy by first thawing the frozen embryo, and transferring it into an appropriately prepared uterus.

Frozen embryos is a term used to refer to those embryos that are not transferred during in vitro fertilization cycles and are subsequently cryopreserved.

Interactive Reflexology

“Reflexology is the technique of applying pressure to specific reflex points on the hands and feet to stimulate the bodies own healing powers.”

I’m trying to see if reflexology is something I can do on my own and that could be beneficial to use before, during and after fertility treatment….

I will post here what I find out later!

Full Moon Spell for Fertility

CURRENT MOON

moon info

I found this “Full Moon Spell for Fertility” at the Fertility Friends BB and I thought it might be worth a try!

I have modified it a bit by increasing the chanting to be repeated 9 times instead of only one and I also decided to leave 9 green leaves on the side to be added to the saucer pan one at a time during the chanting….

Here is what you need to do if you want to try this spell:

(THIS SPELL MUST BE DONE ON A FULL MOON)

Break an egg into a saucer and surround with green leaves (leave 9 leaves on the side to be used during the chant), sprinkle with salt and recite this 9 times, getting gradually faster and faster:

“I will have a baby, the goddess of fertility will bless me soon, before the waning of the moon.” Every time you repeat this chant add one of the 9 green leaves that you saved to the saucer pan, adding them around the egg.

And your spell is done!

After you are done leave the saucer in the garden for the evening.
Some people throw out the egg and leaves, on the following day, under a bush and let it go back to nature that way.

My dogs ate it all so it will go back to nature that way!

If an animal eats the egg during the night it is okay!!!

I will be doing the spell again next month…. The full moon will be starting May 8 thought May 9…. I think!
